There are only a few animals that live in the tundra. These animals have thick fur and are well suited for life in the tundra.
One of these animals is the polar bear. One unique feature of polar bears is there incredibly large paws that help spared weight out when walking on snow and ice. There paws can measure almost a foot across. They're also used for increased propulsion when swimming. Polar bears eat seals, beluga whales and walrus. When food is scarce they will also eat reindeer and muskox.
Another animal is the caribou. Caribou special feet just like the polar bear. The hooves on a caribou change with the seasons, in the winter their hooves grow hair and the pads on the bottom of their hoof get thin and the hair grows over them so that they only touch the snow with the front part of their hoof. Their hooves are also shaped like a crescent so that they can dig effectively in the snow in the winter. The tough rim of their hoof on which they walk on and dig with also provides extra traction for walking on snow and ice. In the summer the pads become soft and sponge like to increase traction on the soft dirt. Caribou will eat a lichen known as reindeer moss in the winter and fungi. In the summer they will eat grasses, ferns, leaves of shrubs and trees.
The predators of caribou are grizzly bears, wolves. Golden eagles will eat caribou calves.
The Golden Eagles lives on the border of the tundra and of the taiga. They go up in the higher latitudes to breed. They eat small rodents. Nothing eats Golden Eagles.
The muskox is an animal well suited for life in the tundra. They have thick fur that is extremely soft and heat extremely well. Muskox has been hunted for their fur which sells for 40 to 80 dollars an ounce. Muskox will eat grass, lichens, moss and arctic willows. They will be eaten by polar bears only when food is scarce.
Snowy Owls are one of the largest species of owls in the world. They can live in very different climates, they usually live in the arctic circle but have been seen as far south as the Caribbean. Their diet is primarily carnivorous but will eat plants. They usually eat small rodent but will take on larger prey such as other birds. The snowy owl has only a few predators one of which is the skua. The skua is a carnivorous bird.
